Back to Center
My heart
ran away with me.
Somehow I have to reel
it back in -
make a boat
of emotions running wild,
sail it on a sea of tears
back to my center -
take refuge in the eye
of the storm surrounding me,
gauge what's real
and what isn't,
strengthen my muscles
in preparation
for a journey
beyond the storm
I face.
This is what's known as an extended metaphor, wherein every part of the comparison is a different aspect of the same rhetorical object.
