Debasis Mukhopadhyay writes

lament for autumn
       for Jay Zimmerman

here yellow sullied by other yellow
nausea
sigh
a fallen bird on earth
like time
the thud dies
in the sleep
of moose marks
across marshes & meadows

or if there was blue
the skull leaked all over the loop of emptiness
now what hangs loose
is a still life
full of leaves ripped from colors

[Here’s something that I wrote remembering a poet & artist friend of mine who died of cancer a few months back]

Faces in the Garden -- Jay S. Zimmerman

THE END WHISPERER

The dead whisper to each other tied together by unseen strands of timeless wandering through the wilderness of pain, smeared like paint across the canvas of time, paint like blood, coagulated colors of frost and sweat in children’s screams over centuries of monsters squashing flesh into roads. Light breaks each morning revealing facades of long lost temples and mosques, of skyscrapers and houses, of bones piled high and peeling flesh. Sounds of mourning pierce like spears as corpses carried high make the journey down the river of insignificance. The wheel just turns and turns over days and months and years and decades and the grieving remains the same wherever its loudspeakers blare the voices of the weeping.  The strand will break and we will all soon be scattered into dark black holes and spit out into the hinterlands of infinity.

one illusion against another foretells a darkness

glued on the blind bottom
of such a darkness
roots pause
i remember how
the blue lacerations
of my shackled ankles
oared away
too fast

Ismaelillo
i wish i could touch you
almost like a sky
to let pass
the echo
unhindered
which asks of you
the assurance of palpable bones

here some days the wholeness of future drifts toward exile
other days toward home
where lilies make a place to rest in my mouth
as i sing mi caballero

This poem is a fragment of a work which alludes to Jose Marti’s first collection of poems Ismaelillo (1882). Written in exile, Ismaelillo was dedicated to his then three-year-old son.

where a song is always missing

between sky & sea
kid is drawing a flounder
still blinking
for knowing the truth
or everything that lives to face away
in your time

this fish is just for you pa
soak it
in the dark
that drifts the moon away

the flounder glistens
as if knowing
what the moon looks like
over a flood
of crumbling ashes
and whispers through my mouth

down the back of my throat
my memories are dark
not so dark though
a song is always missing

images alight or the fade of an iridescent song

you said
kora
you said
waves that undercut
a song
i want
you said
no images this time
a glass jar
where
stripped carcass of fish sprouting
scattered rainbow
filled with God

a poem may be
a wash of the sky

sometimes
ghost is the point
raindrops hit
before leaning away
