Smoke, shadows and dust

Life is such a waiting game; one evening
Here by the crossroads, sitting alone
On an empty bench under a solitary tree -
The sole and extant witness
Of this street's days and ways.

Here, with me, the tree commiserates:
Lonely traveler, emitting sordid smoke,
Trust not the barrenness of the past,
The eternity of the present's travails,
Emit sans care the fire that burns
Thy heart, thy limbs and thy very being!
Know that life is but shadows and dust
What pretense do thee put up in love?
Thou art but shadows and dust,
Shadows and dust; alone thou art -
And then for the grave earmarked.

Prescient tree.
Does it not emit anathemic vapours,
Desolate itself after every sundown?
I feel dizzy, quiet but restless inside;
Gazing at the stream of eternity
Rolling past; quite fast - immanent
In its constancy, but delicate in its steps.

The music that plays, Sibelius, soothes
The noises without, perhaps for good;
Within, this noxious silence, this failure -
This tree, have long killed my vitality.

Wait for me

My love,
Wait for me by the seashores
To the mountains do I go
For conquering my soul.
Come not to find me there -
For lost will I be
Lost and in utter disrepair.
Lost intermittently for friends
Lost probably for hopes
Lost forever from the dead past -
And its dreary woes.
But never for thee,
seldom for thy part.

Lost will I be in the woods
And to those denizens -
More to those elves of hills.
Lost to those brooks and streams
Lost among the pine and cedar
But, them would I love
less than I love thee.

Wait for me by the seas,
For when I return
To thy invitation for a swim,
Purging the wisdom and the dross
Of those alluring spirits of the hills -
Wait until this love for thee
Erupts like a spring,
Flows in myriad fountains
Flies in unbroken wings.

Wait for me, by the seashore, my love -
For return I shall, love thee, I will
Wait not just for my going under
But for the beyond going
Or wait till the seas run dry
Vapours replacing its foaming brine.
This my only promise, this my love's sign,
The eternal sanction and seal -
Till I'm dying.

On nothingness

April is the cruelest month
But how could one justly exonerate
The demons of June, July and August?
Holy blood being spilt each day
Each month the rose of t'morrow
By cruel, loveless fingers plucked away.

Often as it happens, often -
By some standards almost every week
When at the unprepared altar
Of inglorious days, sans will screaming;
Screaming and prying beyond will
Crying, for necessities one flies overhill.

Which month to blame for our sins?
Which way to look for looking away?
The cup remains, albeit dead flowers
Dead like yesterdays, like stale blood
Like the dread of each arrival, dead -
Like every scare of tearing away.

Perhaps April is the cruelest indeed
Making one weak in too much heat
I know not when to stop, where to yield -
Yes yield to the sanctity of this moment.
Years spent in lies, each wish resign'd
Ground to ashes by this beating time.

Some wishes unfulfilled

You're everywhere,
whichever way I look you are there.
I find you
in the careless night of Van Gogh,
in the poise of Mozart's Adagio.
In my books, I find you most
in the austerity of Aurelius.
Wish you were mine
in Marvell's chiseled lust.
No, for you are noumenal,
like the wisdom of Kant.
On most nights,
you do linger in my mind
like a Faustian dream,
only to wither away in a syllogism -
for my life have I not examined.

No, I don't blame you.
I'll store it all,
stash it away like Beethoven's letter
to his immortal love.
And like a gift procured, sans delivered,
when I'm no more,
will posterity judge my ardour
and its sordid denial.
My life
unexamined, dangerous and laid bare.
