Fall
from clouds
pearls diamonds stars
raindrops snowflakes

Fall
from trees
ripe fruits acorns dead leaves
riches for earthlings

Fall
from Grace
raw pain longing mistakes
God’s love, again

CHIDAMBARAM

A White Feather

While I was walking towards it

My destination disappeared
I felt lost
Until I realised that my journey was my destination
And then I wept

As Time, Kaal, swept me up in his chariot
I thought we would stop at the grave
But as we passed by the grave without a pause
I realised
Like Emily Dickinson before me
That the Horse’s Heads
Were turned
Towards Eternity
A desolation then possessed my Soul
And I wept

I thought until
Thought was no more
And then I cried

I cried until

Tears were no more
And I realised
Cries are futile

And that my sorrow is
Ephemeral and shallow
And then I smiled

I thought my smile was cynical
Until I realised cynicism is meaningless
Fragile and brittle
And then I laughed

The laughter liberated me
And I was light with Joy

I laughed
With Joy
Until I was exhausted
And then I slipped
Quietly
Into
Serenity

At last
A sustainable state
Stable steady steadfast
Sure
Sat Chit Anand

The Mind is like the Sky

The Clouds
Pass me by
Yes, the Mind
Is like the Sky

O La Paloma Blanca

O Blessed Peace!

REQUIESCAT

His corpse lies alone on an empty battlefield

                       ,

Like a single punctuation mark on a blank page

Mighty Lord of Heaven!
Send Thou a bolt of Lightning
To burn that broken prone body
And sheets of sudden Rain
From Clouds of Darkness
To wash away the Ashes

Before the Vultures of supposedly necessary Greed
And the Hyenas of supposedly practical Lust
Gnaw at his flesh
And desecrate his bones
And Ants of due Diligence spirit away the rest

Accord him Nature’s dignified farewell
A quick one
Empty the empty field
Completely

He was the last lone Warrior for Truth
In a False world

The Universe watches

An Eremite
A Star prays

Let Purple Heavens
Answer

WHEN AUTUMN COMES

When Autumn comes, remind me

To drink my tea
From maple leaves
With maple honey

When Autumn comes, remind me

To pick pine cones
For fragrance
In woody tones

When Autumn comes, remind me

To fetch walnuts
And cinnamon
Winter abuts

When Autumn comes, remind me

To stop that wheeze
With honey warm
And star anise

When Autumn comes, remind me

We’ll share warm hugs
And ginger tea
In yellow mugs

Remind me, when Autumn comes

BIHAR , LOVE

Ever heard of the phrase
“Keeping your head above the water ?”

This is what it means

It means being sunk neck deep in water
With a stick to keep you steady
And measure the depth to which you are sunk
In powerful waves that rise by the minute

Someone in another state or another country
Or another world
Could decide to open some floodgates any minute
And the water need rise
Only 4 inches
To enter your nose
Your mouth
And in seconds your lungs
And you’re a dead man
In seconds
Too tired to swim in the sunlight
Having swum all night
Your head is tilted back already
To keep the water out of nose and mouth
Not to call out to heavenly powers
Or pray to the sun
Or ask for non existent human help
Your eyes are closed
Drenched not in tears but waves
In complete concentration
To fight Death

You hope for and yet dread your stark survival
So you try to keep some grains dry
And add an old paint tin of clean water
To keep you going in case you survive
Or somehow reach dry land where none may help you
Tie some bamboo stems
Spread some bamboo leaves
A plastic sheet
Keep the wheat you grew
And winnowed
Dry
To feed you
And perhaps a loved one
Out of a whole family you know nothing of
Since the waters parted you just after midnight
Dead? alive? Or Neither?
Half dead ?

There is Death in those waters
Death hovering like a vulture overhead
Your hold on life could snap at any moment
The minute you are just too tired
Your arms pulled out of their sockets
Stretching, strained to breaking point
Your feet getting heavier by the second
Your leg muscles
Unwilling and unable
To hold you up

Life
And the Will to live
Exist mid wave and sky
In you this moment
None can tell
The next

I love you
Do not let life go
I love you, Bihar !

Hold on
For my sake
For God’s sake
Never let go

I know you won’t
Let Death come if it will
But you will fight it
With every atom in your every cell
For that I love you

You teach me love each moment that you live
You teach me life
You give me breath

Love . Bihar .
