While the Moon Hid Her Face
Sadness, a quintessential part
Of our lives, has governed our heart
Since the creation of the universe.
There are institutes of seismology,
Meteorology and hydrology
For various studies of earth’s
functional behaviour
Across the sands of time.
And yet, though the heart has its own
Fire, inundations, tsunamis and sandstorms,
There is so little research done on it.
Poor heart! Just the essentials and that’s
all.
With a single sigh, it disappears
In distant solitude, running out of time.
However, hers is a heart
Which always leaves an impression
appeasing
Wherever she treads with a holistic approach,
Leaving the air replete with
The scent of a million roses.
While the log fire roared
And the turquoise-hued waves
Touched the shores with peerless love,
Her mind brimmed with memories sweet,
Giving to love a transcendant meaning.
She felt she knew her lover
For a million years.
With a sheepish expression,
She looked at the feisty clouds
High up in the sky
While the rhythmic move
Of the swirling branches
Fanned the air with grace.
All of a sudden, she felt her lover’s hands
Holding her breasts lovingly,
Caressing them with soft touches
And gently drawing her close to him,
So passionate, so compassionate in his moves.
And now the fire of desire
Rose with bright flames
Trying to reach those great heights.
Sometimes hard and at other times harder,
And yet, always desiring for more,
The moments stretched
To phenomenal altitudes
Charting the transparent territories of love
While the moon hid her face behind the clouds
For a sight hot as this one,
She had never seen.
The Djinn -- Rithika Merchant
"Djinn" means "beings that are concealed from the senses." They are invisible, supernatural creatures who interact in a tactile manner with the physical world and have bodily needs such as eating and sleeping. They procreate and have families. Allah created the angels (mala'ikah) out of light on a Wednesday and have no bodily desires but are endowed with life, reason, and immortality; the djinn came out of a spark of smokeless fire on Thursday and are not immortal. Angels inhabit the celestial realm, and djinn the sublunary one. Adam, the 1st man, was made from a handful of earth on a Friday a millennium later, and humans are also mortal but are weaker and slower than the djinn. They are all distinguished from the animals, which have no reason or immortality. The djinn and humans are parallel, and both groups are subject to divine judgment. Over time djinn society became corrupt and Allah sent the angels against them. The survivors fled to distant and desolate or abandoned places, but Muhammad was sent to them to reveal Islam. Generally, they remain ignorant, untruthful, oppressive, and treacherous, are afraid of iron, can travel instantaneously from one place to another, eat bones, and prefer rotten flesh. They appear in mists or sandstorms and lack individuality but are able to materialize in different forms, especially black dogs, onagers, and serpents. They are often depicted as monstrous anthropomorphized creatures with body parts from different animals or as human with animalic traits. They bring disease and mental illness to humans as well as inspiration to poets and soothsayers, and help magicians fool people into believing in their magic tricks. Az-Zubayr ibn Al-Awam, the 4th or 5th adult male convert to Islam, accompanied Muhammad on his missionary journey to the djinn and described them as shadowy ghosts. According to some Sufi teachings, a djinni is like an empty cup, composed of its own ego and intention, and is a reflection of its observer.
