According to "The Gospel of John" when Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judaea, presented Jesus to a hostile crowd in Jerusalem after he had been scourged and crowned with thorns, he announced him with the words "Ecce homo" (Behold the man). Immediately afterwards he was crucified. From the 9th or 10th century the scene began to be artistically portrayed and became especially popular from the 15th century onwards.
