Kokopelli is a fertility deity worshiped by many Native American tribes in the Southwestern US. He is usually shown as a humpbacked flute player, often with a large phallus and antenna-like protrusions on his head; some images show knobby knees and clubfeet. These features may be associated with Pott's Disease (tuberculous spondylitis), a form of tuberculosis that occurs outside the lungs, especially in the lower thoracic and upper lumbar vertebrae of the spine. The disease is named after Percivall Pott, an 18th-century surgeon who was one of the founders of orthopedics and the 1st scientist to demonstrate that a cancer may be caused by an environmental carcinogen.
