THAT HOLY NIGHT

The holly smiled rapturously that holy night
Blood red berries soaked in your crimson aura
It was not the night of anticipation either
For upheavals cartwheeled in whirlpools
Tossing me on ocean breakers of nostalgia
It was a night of whispered wishes
Fingers crossed and eyes closed
Beneath the flourishing mistletoe
The old homeless grandpa shuffled
His aching feet in the sub zero freeze
Tarantulas of agony crawled up his bent spine
How could family be so heartless
On such a night of love?
Does an overflowing table with red roses
Ever mean what it is trying to convey?
He peeped surreptitiously through the window
With his eighty year old rheumy eyes
His granddaughter prancing around
In her frilly crimson dress
skipping around the sparkling  Christmas tree
Gifts piled up in a humungous heap
Beneath the over burdened fir tree
A blizzard rose from his innards
Wrecking the festooning wreaths
A tempestuous night it was
Flinging the crimson bows
I gulped the lump in my throat
As I thought about that night
For I was that little girl
Whose grandpa was outdoors!

My Sunshine

When you are my sunshine
Soaked in winter woes
Struggling to peer at
My checkered countenance
Waiting for you in towers of silence
Shadows slink away in terror
For they know you are my life force
The harbinger of my jolly Rudolf
The Santa Claus of my icy wants
My apple cider mulled with spices
The cinnamon to my cloves

A facade

They may be russet and ripened
Gold painted or plated
They may be orange flamed and fiery
Brown pigmented or sepia
They may be curled up and wizened
Weary hearted  or gnarled
They may be blushing red and rosy
Crimson cheeked or flushed

They are autumn leaves you know
And they don't want to go
They know they will have to fall down
Heels will crush them
Birds and chipmunks will frisk and frolic in their heaps
Their golden booty is merely a facade
For their life has run its course
They know their death is imminent
They are aware that there is no cure
What flowers one day must perish

It's their last bid for fame
The resplendent show of colours
The burning fires of hues
It's just to console themselves with my scarlet lipstick shade!
