Kimberly Denise Jones is an American rapper known as Lil' Kim. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, living much of her adolescence on the streets after being expelled from home. At a Warner Bros. stockholders' meeting the record label was criticized "for producing this filth... gangsta porno rap." But Greg Thomas, an English professor at Syracuse University, claimed her lyrics featured "the most profound sexual politics I've ever seen anywhere." In 2005 she was convicted of three counts of conspiracy and one count of perjury for lying to a grand jury about her involvement in a 2001 shooting and sentenced to one year and a day in prison, 30 days home detention, and three years of probation. Before her sentence began, BET premiered the show "Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown," the highest rated premiere in BET's history, averaging 1.9 million viewers; while incarerated she released her fourth album, which sold 109,000 copies in its first week of release and debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart, her 3rd Top 10 debut. But after her release she became better known for her public quarrels with other performers, such as Foxy Brown and Shyne, than her music; her feud with Nickie Minaj led to a track on Minaj's 2nd album called "Stupid Hoe."
ReplyDeleteEdgar Allan Poe was an American writer, editor, and literary critic best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. He was born in Boston; his actor father abandoned the family when Poe was two and his mother died the following year; after that he was raised by John Allan in Richmond, Virginia. He quarralled with his foster father, who did not want to be rsponsible for Poe's gambling debts. He was expelled from the West Point military academy for gross neglect of duty and disobedience of orders for refusing to attend formations, classes, or church. In 1836 he married his 13-yar-old cousin and struggled as a writer in various cities. He alienated himself from other writers by publicly accusing Henry Wadsworth Longfellow of plagiarism; Ralph Waldo Emerson derisively referred to Poe as "the jingle man." In 1845 he became famous due to the publication of his poem "The Raven," but he was only paid $9 for it. On October 3, 1849, he was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore, wearing clothes that were not his own, and taken to the Washington Medical College, where he died on 7 October; he was 40 years old. His last words were "Lord help my poor soul." It has been speculated that the cause of his death was alcoholism, drugs, delirium tremens, epilepsy, syphilis, cholera, meningeal inflammation, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, or cooping (a form of electoral fraud in which citizens were forced to vote for a particular candidate, sometimes leading to violence and even murder).
