This is a very touching vignette. It lacks poetic floweration but strikes like a sledgehammer to the heart.

ReplyDeleteIndeed. Long poems have dissipated most of their power for contemporary readers. Not so long ago Edgar Allan Poe insisted that poems should not be over 100 lines (though he himself sometimes violated his own rule) -- most students think even that modest number is far too high!
