On The Highway
I
travel the towns in pickup trucks
cement or
container lorries, and taxis
or anyone
offering a ride in the heat
Ahmed from Rustaq
has been
a taxi driver for thirty-five years
two
wives, sixteen children
and he’s
a good driver, a gentleman
and happy to be going
home
as we
cruise on to Liwa
talking
and smiling
all the
way down the Batinah Coast
Another of Vernon's diary poems from the Middle East.
