William H. Drummond writes

Rain Boy

Rain boy was dying,
The face and the lips.
Last moments crying,
Can he come to grips?

Evaporation,
A slow way to go.
Mistification,
Oh, how could he know?

Life had been so sweet,
He floated on air!
Landed on his feet,
And swam down the stair.

In river floated,
Down to the salt sea.
Round castle moated,
Up fountain so free!

In seaweed and soy,
In kitten and deer,
And last in a boy,
And out as a tear.

A tear on a cheek,
Stays not very long.
Before you can speak,
It sings its sad song.

Drawn home to mamma,
To papa and sis,
Rain boy’s short drama,
Is sealed with a kiss.

  1. The simplicity of its presentation fits well with its message. It nicely captures both the naivete and sophistication of a child.
