  1. The FSB (Federal'naya sluzhba bezopasnosti Rossiyskoy Federatsii, Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation) is Russia's principal security agency, the main successor of the USSR's KGB (Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti, Committee for State Security). It was created in 1995, and in 2003 was enlarged by incorporating the Border Guard Service and parts of the Federal Agency of Government Communication and Information. Its main responsibilities include counter-intelligence, internal and border security, counter-terrorism, surveillance, and combating organized crime. It is classified as a military service that employs 66,000 uniformed staff, including about 4,000 special forces troops, and 200,000 border guards. Its creator, Russian president Boris Yeltsin, installed his own successor, former KGB lieutenant colonel Vladimir Putin, as its director in 1998.
