Seventh Heaven -- Eric Sosnowski
Seventh Heaven or 7th Heaven is a state of euphoria. In religious or mythological cosmology, the seven heavens refer to the divisions of Heaven, the abode of immortal beings, or the visible sky (the expanse containing the sun, moon, and stars). The idea of seven heavens originated in Sumer in the late second millennium BCE; one incantation was "the heavens are seven, the earths are seven." The late-first-century "Second Book of Enoch," possibly a Christian work though not regarded as scripture by any group, described Enoch's travels through the seven heavens and gave a geographical and visual documentation of them, before meeting God in the 7th Heaven. According to the Talmud, the universe is made of seven heavens (Shamayim), and the Jewish Merkavah and Heichalot literature was devoted to discussing the details of these heavens, sometimes in connection with traditions relating the 5th-century "Third Book of Enoch." The Qur'an frequently mentions the existence of seven "samaawat" (heavens), though some commentators interpret "seven" as meaning "many." In some Muslim sources, each of the seven heavens is depicted as being composed of a different material, and each has prophets in residence: The first heaven is made of silver and is the home of Adam and Eve, as well as the angels of each star; the second is made of gold and is the home of John the Baptist and Jesus; the third is made of pearls or other dazzling stones and is the home of Joseph and Azrael; the fourth is made of white gold and is the home of Enoch and the Angel of Tears; the fifth is made of silver and is the home of Aaron and the Avenging Angel; the sixth is made of garnets and rubies nd is the home of Moses; and the seventh is composed of divine light which is incomprehensible to humans and is the home of Abraham. According to some Puranas, the Brahmanda is divided into fourteen worlds: seven upper worlds (Bhuloka [the Earth], Bhuvarloka, Svarloka, Maharloka, Janarloka, Tapoloka and Satyaloka) and seven lower worlds (Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talatala, Mahatala, Rasatala and Patala). According to Jain cosmology, there are seven levels of Naraka (Hell), which are subdivided into 8,400,000 other hellish locations.
