John Sweet writes

back to zero

dawn/no dawn & hands held
out at the edge of town

empty but not broken

grey light kissing yr sister’s eyes
and that these are only human wars

that we are only lovers

cold rooms on the shadowed
sides of silent buildings

the dust of factories

thought it was february
because i felt no pain

thought it was spring when the
hands of forgotten children
began reaching up out of the mud

the trick of course is to not
despair in the face of
your own death

the hope is to strip away every
emotion until all that
you’re left with is truth

  1. When the World Trade Center in New York opened in 1973 it featured the Twin Towers, which were the tallest buildings in the world at the time. They were both destroyed on 11 September 2001 when al-Qaeda hijackers flew two Boeing 767 jets into the complex. At 8:46 AM American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the northern facade of the North Tower. At 9:03 United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the southern facade of the South Tower. After burning for 56 minutes, the South Tower fell at 9:59, followed by the North Tower after burning for 102 minutes. Their collapse caused structural failure in many of the surrounding buildings. The attack killed 2,753 people. The clean-up took eight months.
