John S. Howard writes

Down A Well

Verse 1

The man, he lowered himself,
lowered himself beyond all help.
till he lost all track, all track of time.

The man, he lied, lied in vain,
said he knew the way, out of pain,
what a fool to think that he was fine.

Chorus

He was down a well, down a deep dark place,
away from the warmth of the human  race,
down a well with no reflection of his face.

Verse 2

The drugs, the drugs sent him high,
sent him above, way high in the sky,
but he never left, never left the ground.

Chorus

He was down a well, down a deep dark place,
away from the warmth of the human race,
down a well with no reflection of his face.

Bridge

He cried, “Take me away to when I was a boy,
take me back to when I felt pure joy.”

Verse 2

The man, the man on the street,
is the kind of man you don’t want to meet.
But he’s your brother, don’t let him out of your sight.

The rope, the rope’s right in front of you,
toss it down, toss it down’s what you wanna do,
don’t let him hang, pull him into the light.

Chorus

He’s down a well, down a deep dark place,
away from the warmth of the human race,
down a well with no reflection of his face.

Bridge

He cried, “Take me away to when I was a boy,
take me back to when I felt pure joy.”
