Pramila Khadun writes

AUTISTIC ANGELS

Some autistic angels tread on earth
And all those whose life flows clean
Take notice and help them and their parents.
The time-worn stones smile at them
And the moon flaps her wings to show her love.

When I see an enigmatic smile on the lips
Of non-verbal autistic angels,
Surges of joy rise in my heart.
I hold their hands, and all my senses
Feel the positive energy flowing in my veins.

I look into their eyes and I see
Reflections of the cosmos in colors magnificent.
All my sorrows melt like mounds of snow
And I am slowly transported in their world——
A world of innocence, charms and beauties unparalleled.
I no longer oscillate between doubt and despair,
I feel new vistas opening, overflowing
All the cells of my body with love.
For hours, we hold mute conference
And we feel so enlivened, so enriched
It is a blessing to have an autistic angel,
The pen metamorphoses into a brush
And the brush into a pen.
They are so eye-opening, a vortex of peace
Where there is no place for rivalry,
Division and sub-division ending in war.

Let our colors flow into the colors
Of autistic angels who are so often misunderstood.
Life is a journey and in innumerable guises,
Autistic angels portray the reasons for living
A life full of love, compassion and forgiveness.

 Spectrum Angel -- Samma

Autism is a group of developmental brain disorders collectively known as autism spectrum disorder. Because an autistic boy once told his friend, "I have a missing puzzle piece in my brain,' autism's symbol is a puzzle piece, so Samma painted over tissue paper cut into puzzle pieces.

  1. Leviticus 21:21 mandates, "No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is come near to present the food offerings to the LORD. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God.” Rashbi (Shimon bar Yokhai), the 2nd-century author of the “Zohar”(the main part of the Kabbalah) tried to explain the text in the following way: “When the moon is rendered defective by the same aspect of the evil serpent, like all the souls that are issued, although they were all pure and sacred, are flawed. Since they emerged at a defective time, whichever place these souls reach [i.e. bodies] are crushed, and suffer pains and afflictions. The Holy One, blessed be He, cares for those who are broken, although their souls are sad instead of joyous. The secret is that they remain as they were above. While the body is flawed, the soul inside remains the same as above. The one state resembles the other. Therefore, they are to be renewed like the moon, as it is written [in Isaiah 66:23): ‘”From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow before me, says the LORD.’" ‘All mankind’ assuredly, for they are in need of renewal along with the moon…. These righteous are the constant companions of the moon and have the identical defects.... And ‘The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all’ [Psalm 34: 19] -- that is, to those who suffer from the same defect as the moon, those who are always near her. ‘The LORD … saves those who are crushed in spirit’ [Psalm 34: 18], by giving them a portion of the life … because they who suffered with her shall also be renewed with her.... Those defects from which the righteous suffer are called ‘sufferings of love,’ because they are caused by love and not by the man himself… Happy is their portion in this world and in the world to come....” The moon is a reference to the Shechinah, the immanent divine presence in the world. Like the moon it waxes and wanes. Some souls are conceived (not on earth, but above) at the waxing of the cycle and enter the world with strong bodies and easily glide through life; other are conceived with its waning and share the Shechina’s suffering. Therefore, the Shechina is their constant companion. Eventually, this cycle will be resolved in the eternal fullness as God's presence; the Shechinah will shine in ultimate intensity, and her souls "shall also be renewed with her." Fourteen centuries later Yitzhak Ben Sh'lomo Lurya Ashkenazi (“Ha’ARI,” The Lion, the founder of contemporary Kabbalism] explained that everything is vitalized and sustained by a divine spark. The higher the spark, the lower it falls, so the most intense divine light is found in the darkest places. The Shechinah is both the light of God's presence and the mother of all souls, and the function of the human soul is to rescue the fallen sparks from darkness so they may be reconnected to the Infinite Light. To perform that rescue the Shechinah suffers as she descends into the darkness. In the 19th century Menachem Mendel Schneersohn (the Tzemach Tzedek) expanded on the ARI’s idea by equating the spiritual task of the unblemished souls to a victorious army that subdues an enemy force without completely eradicating it. But those born with an external blemish (their soul remains whole) have the task of destroying evil so that it ceases to exist. In order to do battle face to face with the darkness, the soul needs to have some of that darkness itself, yet only externally, so that the darkness can be redeemed.
