Taejongdae
(for Anna Lou)
Around this island
the tour boats
circulate
chug-chug motor running
heartbeat thumping
bounce upon the swells
avoid the jagged rocks where
sea birds nest
swoop along cliffs
of silver magnolias
blooming red camellias
upon invisible air currents
dive, and gracefully rise again
like no airplane ever invented.

The wind swirls in my mind.
From here I can see Tsushima Island
In the distance
Sunset beaming
taste the salt of your smile.

Taejongdae --Choung Sang Bok
Taejongdae is a natural park on the southernmost tip of Yeongdo, an island off central Busan, Korea. It is notable for its rugged cliffs facing the open sea, from which Tsushima, a Japanese island about halfway between Korea and Japan, can be seen. It was named after king Taejong Muyeol of Silla, who unified the Korean peninsula in the seventh century.
