Laurie Kuntz writes

Egret in the Middle of the Road Taking a Chance

This time of day, it is possible,
although there is not much traffic,
that a car, sun spot blinding view, will swerve,
haphazardly, giving the egret, standing in the middle of black top,
no time to sense danger, or fly,
as it looks, at this moment, with no traffic looming,
comfortably out of place, ambling
under palm and highway dividers,
taking its chances—
not wavering under the canopy of stupidity or wisdom.
