He believed firstborns are "dethroned" when a 2nd child comes along, and thus loses his feeling of privilege and primacy. Middle children may feel ignored or overlooked, while younger (and only) children are often pampered and spoiled. In 1966 Frank J. Sulloway further developed the theory, claiming that younger children work harder to get parental attention, take more risks, and become creative rebels.
