  1. The vikings took their name from the Old English "wicing" (pirate). They were Scandinavian seafarers of the 8th-11th centuries who raided and settled much of Europe, explored westward across the Atlantic to Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland (Canada), and sailed as far south as Africa, as far east as Istanbul and Baghdad. In 841 they founded Dublin and ruled the city until the Normand invasion of Ireland in 1169. They controlled. Vikibgs captured Eoforwic (York) in 866 and controlled parts of Northumbria, Mercia, and East Anglia until the 11th century. Two Vikings, Sweyn Forkbeard and his son Cnut the Great, were kings of England from 1013–1035, and Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king was descended from Danes. He was defeated in 1066 by duke William of Normanz (king William I), another descendant of vikings, who began their conquest of the future Normandie in 841; in 941 Hrólfr Ragnvaldsson was named duc by Charles II of West Francia; the Normaunds began operating in Italia in 1017 and established the county of Ariano soon after; from southern Italia they took Malta, and Roger was crowned king of Sicilia in 1130. Three brothers (Rurik, Sineus, and Truvor) established themselves in Novgorod, Belozersk, and Izborsk, which became the nucleus of Rus' (Russia); Rus' annexed Kiev in 882, making it the capital. Sicilian Normans established themselves in Antioch, Syria, during the 1st Crusade in 1098.
