Weekend Bliss
I
couldn't scrawl a poem
on
the way to work.
My
coffee corpse eyes
were
rolling down the
overflowing
river
and
my carpal tunnel
shocked
rollercoaster drop wrists
shook
like a swaying couple
at
an outdoor Alanis Morissette concert.
I
counted seconds at the stoplight
and
said a quick prayer today
would
go okay.
Now
that school is over
I
hear fireworks every night
knocking
on my window as
unemployed
birds wanting to
have
conversations about why
Gary
painted his house yellow or
about our
new mailman who rips open birthday cards.
I
don't keep track.
I
just sit in a windowless room
spewing
lines seven and a half
patrons
will read.
If
is worth anything, nowadays,
in
a jibber-jabber status update
satisfaction
of notifications
and
gas tank on E lemme fill up
'fore
it hits $4 a gallon again
and
neighbors crowd my lawn
to
discuss it and siphon
chewing
tobacco at me
as
I chug down coffee bits
in
my morning talk show routine
of
my own introversion.
Naomi Mitchison published her 1st novel, "The Conquered," in 1923, when she was 26, and went on to write over 90 books and hundreds of newspaper books. She refused to be called Lady Mitchison, even though she was entitled to the honorific when her husband, a Labor Party political leader, was given a life peerage in 1964 and she herself became a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1981. Her output included poetry, short stories, plays, historical fiction, science fiction, travel writing, autobiography, and political and commentary.
ReplyDeleteAlanis Morissette recorded and co-wrote 2 albums, that included 6 top-40 hits in Canada, when she was a teenager. After she moved to Los Angeles she made "Jagged Little Pill" in 1995. It spawned 6 hit singles, sold more than 33 million copies, and gained 7 Juno awards and 4 Grammies. She followed up with "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" in 1998, which also garnered a Juno. The 2 albums were among the most influential of the decade due to their sharp, personal lyrics.
